about

Middle of the road.

There will come a point in time when you’ve reached a personal brick wall, saw too much, achieved seemingly too little, drove past home looking for more…or less. Filled your lungs beyond maximum enough times.

But, what else is there? And more importantly, where else?

It’s not the ego of ‘what’s in it for me’ whatsoever. It has absolutely nothing to do with that—in this cynical and snarky world where we live by headlines and first paragraphs.

It’s the ‘what am I here to do—to achieve more, to be better for myself and to others?’

What’s my purpose?

Rules, personal pathways, growth, vision, admiration, desire. Like a long repetitive song, sometimes you want to change the channel. A need to make the change. Or, don’t know how to reach the knob to do that. When all debts aren’t thought of and you only owe yourself to be the best you, you can be.

Staring off into the distance, it’s a moment in time where you take note in dissonant worry or depression that things could be better. Even though things could already be well. A long walk, restless sleep, tireless conversations, boredom with a smile. Hearing your surroundings, you daydream out asking, ‘what is this?’ Get me out of here and onward…please.

But it’s not like a child’s tantrum, or a social media meme. It’s not an adult squabble or hearing things you could care less about at work. Not political or sporty. It’s trying to center where you need to be most to lift others up. To be a light in the dark, as much for yourself, as you would like to be for others.

But how do we achieve that? How do we turn the corner to write a new kind of story, starting a new book opposed to turning a page. Not to be a hero, but a channel for compassion and invigoration to help one-another and become one onto oneself.

We all reach this and at various times in life. When the little light goes on and pulls you out of now. It may be saddening, enlightening, scary and driving, or all at once.

My new album is a concept on the varying degrees, lifetime, and struggles we all can relate to. Two stages led me to penning this and pushing aside the album I intended to record. One was this calling that came to me during a performance with two of my bandmates in July—in the worst of years, 2020. Like a light in the darkness. The music we made as a trio was enlightening and transoptical. Visions and elation. Older folk could relate, young children danced. The other was a text from one of my longest and dearest friends saying, ‘I’m glad you found your purpose. I’m looking for mine.’ A comment based on the value of excitement performing, writing and recording music which has apparently pushed into my outward feelings. It had me thinking, is this my purpose? Maybe she’s right. This is my conduit for bridging my small footprint path in humanity and hoping to catch ears and smiles along the way.

Maybe…

What’s yours?
